Expert Sailing Advice from the Professionals at Cyanos Yachting

As the colder months approach, boating continues to offer unique and beautiful experiences. At Cyanos Yachting, we believe that safety should always come first, ensuring that every moment at sea remains enjoyable and secure. This guide presents the most important tips and procedures we follow to provide a safe and comfortable chartering experience.

Boat Inspection

At Cyanos Yachting, each boat follows an annual, detailed inspection and maintenance program, with all services completed according to engine hours and manufacturer guidelines. This ensures that our boats are fully prepared for allyear around use. Before setting sail, we confirm that the bilge pump systems is operating correctly, that there are no alarms or warnings on the electronic displays, and that all onboard systems are functioning as they should — including the electronic charts, radar, and VHF. These checks help ensure a safe and trouble-free experience at sea.

Checking Weather Conditions

While winter in Greece often brings calmer winds compared to the strong “meltemi” of the summer months, conditions can still change quickly. For accurate and up-to-date information, we always consult reliable sources such as the Windy app, the Poseidon system, and EMY.gr. Staying informed ensures a safe and well-prepared journey.

Being Visible and Aware

To ensure safe sailing in low-light conditions, our boats are equipped with advanced systems that support both visibility and overall awareness. Onboard radars provide clear detection of vessels and potential hazards, while night-vision cameras offer an additional layer of safety when natural light is limited. All required navigation lights are also in place, ensuring that your presence is clearly seen by others at sea. Most importantly, an experienced captain is at the helm, expertly using all these systems to ensure the highest level of safety throughout your journey.

Safety Equipment on Board

Our boats are fully equipped with all essential safety systems to support you in any unexpected situation. On board, there is a VHF with a distress button, which sends an instant emergency alert with your position to the Coast Guard and nearby vessels, and an EPIRB, a beacon that transmits your exact location via satellite in an emergency. Each boat also carries a certified life raft, hand flares and smoke signals, phone chargers, first-aid equipment, fire extinguishers, and many more approved safety items. All safety equipment undergoes annual servicing and maintenance and is inspected and verified by the Coast Guard, ensuring it is always in optimal condition for your safety.

Operational Planning

Winter sailing requires careful preparation. We always organize, check, and evaluate every trip in advance, reviewing the weather in detail to ensure safe conditions. Our clients and passengers are informed 2–4 days before each sail about the expected weather, sea state, and any factors that may influence the journey. This thorough approach allows us to make the right decisions and provide a safe and reliable experience for everyone on board.

Dressing Appropriately

Our boats feature a heated cabin powered by a climate-control system, providing a warm and comfortable space during winter sailing. When you step outside the cabin — whether at the port or on deck — make sure to dress with proper layering and wear suitable boat shoes.

Before We Depart

Before leaving the dock, we take the time to inform our guests about the boat and all the key details they need to know for a smooth and enjoyable trip. We provide clear guidance on how everything on board operates and share any important information that helps them feel comfortable and well-prepared throughout the journey.

Winter sailing carries its own unique charm, offering a calm and captivating view of the Greek sea. The sea is often calmer than in the summer months, and the islands are far less crowded, offering a more relaxed and authentic experience. With thoughtful preparation and the right mindset, every trip can be both safe and thoroughly enjoyable. We look forward to welcoming you on board and sharing this special season with professionalism and care.
