THE ISLAND
Aegina is like something out of a movie, with picture-perfect homes, winding lanes, horses pulling carriages while sporting vividly colored tassels, rich plains, terraced hillside olive groves, and azure sea. It was at the epicenter of the Greek independence struggle in the early 19th century, serving as the nation’s first capital under Capodistrias (from 1828 to 1829) and seeing the construction of the country’s first mint, printing press, museum, and library. Many philosophers and artists, including Varnalis, Kazantzakis, Sicelianos, Sepheris, Elytis, Geralis, Vasileiou, Nicolaou, and Kapralos lived on the island and drew inspiration for their great works of art from its breathtaking natural setting. Agia Marina is the most well-liked coastal resort, while Souvala, Vagia, Marathon, and Perdika are more secluded destinations. Numerous cultural events take place in Aegina all year long, but especially in the summer. Festivals and feasts are celebrated locally, and sailing competitions, concerts, plays and exhibitions are conducted frequently.
